Easy to play and extremely fun. Padel is one of the fastest growing sports across continental Europe. It was invented in 1969 by a Mexican businessman who didn’t have the space for a tennis court. He came up with a similar activity that needed less space. Due to its simplicity and similarities to existing racquet sports, padel has gained increasing popularity over recent years. Over six million people already play padel in Spain. Now it’s our turn!
Tennis with walls
Some people refer to padel as ‘tennis with walls’ or ‘squash in the sun.’ We couldn’t agree more. The sport combines the best elements of tennis, squash and racquetball. You play padel on an enclosed court, surrounded by walls. The court is about a third of a tennis court, allowing players to interact with one another. Although padel is usually played between four people, a one against one game is possible too.
5 things you need to know about padel:
- The scoring system is similar to tennis: tracked on a scale of 15, 30, 40, and game.
- Unlike tennis, you must serve underhand and below the waist.
- You have two attempts to serve. The serve must be diagonal.
- You have to switch after every odd game (1st, 3rd, 5th set).
- It’s enjoyable no matter your skill level!
